A coalition of partners stress the importance of safety precautions on the road
The human eyes are pivotal components of the sense organs and serve the purpose of vision. No doubt, road users especially the drivers need to have good and clear virtual sight that would enable them to drive properly.
The You and The Road, an annual event of Greenlight Initiative, was put together in collaboration with the Junior Chamber International (JCI Abuja Unity), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
The event started with a road walk from Berger round about to Jabi Motor park. While on the road, drivers and pedestrians were given highly educative materials on road safety. The choice of the park was strategic since it is the largest in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. People travel from JABI park to every part of the country.
During the free eye screening exercise,drivers with eye defects took turn to get the free eye checkup.
The beneficiaries from the free eye checkup expressed joy, satisfaction and thank the convener of the organizer for the laudable project which have brought relief to them.
The executive director of GreenLight Initiative, Simon Obi said over “1220 lives were lost in the first quarter of 2018 according to report by FRSC and National Bureau of Statistics”.
He encouraged motorists to avoid over-speeding and adhere to traffic rules. He also enjoined government to enact policies that would ban the sales of banned substances and alcohol at motor parks.
In his remark, the FCT Sector Commander of FRSC, Commander Wobin Ayuba enlightened drivers on road safety tips during the raining season. He stressed the need to have mechanically sound vehicles, good tires, and functioning wipers.
He also made case for the use of seat belt, respect for traffic lights, reduced speed and avoidance of reckless driving. He appealed to drivers to shun night traveling due to its dangers.
Mrs. Grace Niniola, President of JCI Abuja Unity advised drivers to be safety conscious as more crashes occur during the raining season.
