Presidential assent for bill establishing Federal School of Med Lab Science

Osinbajo signs law establishing Federal School of Medical Laboratory Science Jos

Over the weekend, Nigeria’s Vice President, Ayo Osinbajo, signed the bill establishing the Federal School of Medical Laboratory Technology (Science) Jos into law.

The Bill was sponsored by Rep. I.D. Gyang member representing Barikin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency in the National Assembly  and it is for an Act to Establish the Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science, Jos No. HB.15.07.39, C769-790.

The Act establishing the institution provides for running of Courses leading to the award of Degrees, Fellowships, Diplomas and Certificates in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, and other related Courses.

The Act now serves as the necessary legal framework backing and authenticating the institution and the integrity of its Degrees and other Certificates.

Gyang said: “I rejoice with Nigerians as this is yet another milestone in building and consolidating the study and practice of Medical Laboratory Science and Biomedical Science in our nation.

“It is also a testimony of my legislative contribution as a member of the 8th Assembly along with previous legislative efforts towards nation building in the education and health sector.

“I equally acknowledge and appreciate the Rt Hon Speaker, Yakubu Dogara and all members of the 8th Assembly for the successful passage of the Bill through the rigorous and mandatory legislative process.”

The government of Plateau Government has lauded the decision of the government to sign the bill into law. Plateau Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dan Manjang, in a statement described the new law as a landmark in the accelerated development of the state.

He said: “This gesture will go a long way in correcting the education imbalance that exists in the state in that field of study.

“The state government has been working towards the achievement of this feat for more than six years now to enable courses in the institutions certified, and facilitate the school’s expansion.

“This can only be achieved with this giant stride of signing the Act by the Acting President.”
